While the Grinch may have tried to steal Christmas, it was the Gremlins who took home the top prize in the town’s Christmas Decorating Contest.

The Gremlins ‘attack on New York City for Christmas was the theme for the Top Judges’ Choice award at 1780 Memory Lane in the second annual competition sponsored by the City of Porterville Parks and Recreation Department. The display is presented by the Vasquez family.

There were 20 participants in this year’s competition. Parks and Recreation Services said it “has had an incredible response from the community.

“We are really impressed with all the efforts of our participants and grateful that they are ready to make our community a little brighter this season.”

Competitors decorated their walls, roofs, doors and courtyards with the brightest lights and festive decor. The participating houses were judged on visual impact, creativity / innovation, use of space, incorporation of a theme and cohesion. “

The Judges’ Choice Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places based on competition criteria. An audience award was also determined by contestant photo submissions and most online votes from the audience.

The Lost Christmas Gnomes in Smeeville presented by the Smee family at 2158 W. Union Ave. won the audience award. Santa’s Toy Store at 1686 River Springs Ave. presented by the Carbajals, who won second place, also won the Judges Choice Awards; and A Lit Christmas at 645 N. Belmont St. presented by Josh Markin and A Miranda Christmas at 635 Salisbury presented by the Carbajals tied for third.

The Parks and Recreation services encourage all families to have a cup of cocoa and to visit all the festive houses in the community. All participants received a sign indicating that their home was part of the competition. “Each of the places is unique and creative in its own way,” said Parks and Leisure Services.
