In the midst of vibrant Berlin and yet comfortably integrated into the romantic setting of a historic 19th century brewery – today’s creative base Kulturbrauerei – Lucia’s Christmas Market, dedicated to Scandinavian Christmas culture, is located. Lucia’s Christmas market takes place in the outdoor space of Kulturbrauerei’s two courtyards which turn into a brightly lit Christmas world with around 70 historic stalls and rides.
Named after Lucia, the Nordic goddess of light, the market is dedicated to the Scandinavian countries. There are heated “Swedenfires” with open flames, and a unique feature is the “Open-Air-Mantel-Heizung” art object. Five places have been arranged for guests to warm up. Warmth is provided by an old-fashioned wood-burning stove, and cold visitors can don the fur coats waiting for them ready and warm. Nordic flair is supported by Scandinavian music.
In the afternoon, Santa Claus visits the children. They whisper wishes in her ear or put them in the greeting mailbox. The darker it is, the more Lucia blazes: thousands of sparkling points of light make their way through the courtyards of the Kulturbrauerei. These are hours for the grown-ups. Lucia is turning into a favorite haunt for Berliners and curious people around the world looking for a very special gift and enjoying local and Scandinavian delicacies. Speaking of delicacies: there’s no way for a one-time visitor to try all of the (over twenty) variations of mulled spicy wine – from the local standard, Vintner’s White, Swedish Glögg, Finnish Glögi to Icelandic mulled wine. If you try and find yourself in the arms of a great white angel, don’t doubt yourself: the angel is real. Every night, he visits the market and envelops walkers in his thirst for life, wisdom and protection.
Lucia’s Christmas market is not big enough to get lost and not small enough to get bored. It evokes the feeling of a traditional natural Christmas with family and friends.
